Six Kung Fu students from Golden Lion (3 juniors and 3 adults) formed part of the Australian team who competed in the Inaugural World Wushu Festival held in Zhengzhou, China, October 2004. Wushu is a generic term that encompasses the traditional Chinese martial arts of Kung Fu and Tai Chi. Athletes of various age groups, from children to veterans competed in both traditional and modern Wushu. The principal of the Academy, Grandmaster Dr Pier Tsui-Po, said today "This result is only possible with a team of highly trained and experienced instructors who offer consistently high quality training programmes in fully equipped facilities". The Final Medal Count for Golden Lion Kung Fu members are 4 Gold, 8 Silver and 1 Bronze.

Wu Shu is a general term that encompasses various types of Chinese martial arts. The categories of Wu Shu practice are:

  • Nan Quan - Southern Kung Fu (bare hands and weapons)

  • Chang Quan - Northern Kung Fu (bare hands and weapons)

  • Tai Chi (bare hands and weapons)

  • San Shou - Full contact sparring
  • There are also World Championships held every two years. Four Types of Membership
The aim of the following types of membership is to offer specialised training that is targeted to your interest and which is also commensurate with your abilities. This will help you be the best you can be in your chosen field and help you improve faster and quicker.

    1. Core Curriculum - Black Belt Programme
    2. Specialised International Competitions Class (Bare hands and Weapons)
    3. Specialised Dim Mak Pressure Points Class
    4. Kung Fu Program For Children

    1. Core Curriculum - Black Belt programme
These are traditional kung fu classes for better health, fitness and self-defence. It is a complete mind and body programme that builds you to Black Belt level and beyond. It has been designed to give maximum benefits over a period of four years. Even one year training will produce gains, which are reinforced as each year goes by.

Every student of the Academy trains in this programme. Here's what you'll learn and enjoy:

  • Self-Defence applications against a knife, stick or unarmed assailant.  You learn subtle circular positioning movements that off-balance your opponents by using their force to your advantage. This sharpens your reflexes, judgement, timing and improves your speed so that you can defend yourself.
  • Breathing and Meditation forms, which teach you to breathe properly and prevent respiratory diseases such as asthma. You learn mind control exercises to relieve stress.
  • Animal forms: various punches, blocks, kicks and stances are used in     these forms to build strength and flexibility. These are based on     the movements of the Tiger, Dragon, Snake, Leopard and Crane.
  • Weaponry: From your very first week at training, you learn the cudgel     to further improve coordination and strength. Knowing the techniques of    the cudgel is handy because you may use a broom to defend yourself.    You can also learn a variety of weapons.
  • Pressure Points for self defence and healing (adults classes only).
  • Golden Lion's Shaolin Dummies allow you to practise your self-defence    techniques at full power and speed without hurting yourself. This is    special equipment unique to Golden Lion and is not available elsewhere.
  •
  • You will also develop the character, attitude and discipline you need to    succeed in life. At Golden Lion you'll learn to further develop the    finer human traits such as respect, patience, perseverance, humbleness     and calmness.
  •
  • Iron Palm training and Chinese Lion Dance Ceremonies are also taught.
  •

    2. Specialised International Competitions Class (Bare Hands and Weapons)
This is an additional class to the core curriculum. The class focuses on specialised Bare Hands Routines, Weapon Routines and Essential techniques for competition. It does not include bag and dummy work or combat such as sparring or self-defence.

To join this team, you must already be doing at least one class a week in the Core Curriculum (see number one option) to learn overall skills that you will need in the Competition class. Two classes per week in the Core Curriculum are required if you are serious in competing in tournaments.

The fee for this class is separate to all other memberships. Anyone irrespective of experience can enrol in this class. Give it a go. You won't know unless you try.

    3. Specialised Dim Mak Pressure Points Class

This is an additional class to the core curriculum which also includes the study of pressure points. This class is taught by our Grandmaster, Dai Sifu Dr Pier Tsui-Po. It includes pressure points, combat methods, practical applications and self-defence. For safety, contact to pressure points is avoided.

Golden Lion is the leader in this field. With Dim Mak you increase your power and gain sharper focus with your techniques. You'll know exactly where to strike in self-defence so that you use minimum force to get maximum power.

Tuition fee for this class is separate to all other memberships. To join this class, you must already be attending the Core Curriculum classes to learn important skills that you will need in the Dim Mak class.

    4. Kung Fu Program for Children (girls and boys):
Through this tailored children's program, each student is supported and encouraged to achieve their personal best, at an individual pace:

    • the physical aspects of the program help to develop fitness, flexibility, coordination and strength.
    • the program increases self esteem and confidence; the student can visually see, through weekly entries in their personal training books by their instructor, what they have accomplished, how far they have come and where they are going.
    • the class structure and origins of kung fu reinforce many principles including integrity, honesty, patience, tolerance, and respect, for the student themselves and to others.
    • the syllabus and curriculum are designed specifically for children, allowing them to graduate from beginner through to advanced level in a supportive, safe and friendly environment.

The following are Curriculum aims for each Child:

    • Each student to achieve their highest potential, in and out of class.
    • All students experience a supportive and welcoming atmosphere, from instructors and students alike.
    • All students receive individual attention, enabling them to progress at their own pace.
    • Provide a well-balanced curriculum fostering physical, personal and mental well-being and growth.
    • Provide a well-planned syllabus that allows students to progress from beginner through to advanced belt levels, while maintaining international standards.

Quality is the Key At Golden Lion
The Golden Lion Academy is a team of highly qualified professional instructors committed to giving you the best so that you can achieve your peak mental and physical condition.

Since 1971, the Golden Lion Academy has been teaching Australians how to be fit, healthy, calm and strong using the techniques of kung fu.

The Academy is owned and operated by brothers Pier, Charles and Richard Tsui-Po. They have a history of three generations in Chinese martial and healing arts. Therefore authenticity, safety, experience and quality are assured.

Golden Lion Kung Fu teaches you to defend yourself, increase fitness, power, self-discipline and mind control. Physical benefits include development of balance, coordination, flexibility and power.

Senior Master Richard Tsui-Po, the Director of kung fu, says students can also expect increased self-confidence, motivation, concentration, decision-making abilities and stress control.

Golden Lion Kung Fu is a way of life that fine-tunes all the elements of your body - physical, emotional, intellectual, energetic and spiritual - into a balanced, healthy unit.

The Tsui-Po masters believe that their teaching system will allow you to gain positive results from Kung Fu while you enjoy your membership.

    Immediate Results
Immediate results are promised from the first lesson, with students later progressing to advanced techniques. This is possible for two reasons. First, the Tsui-Po family provides you with high quality instruction and personal attention during each visit. Second, they have developed their curriculum to suit Australians since 1971. Their unique method is based on long experience; it is thoroughly researched and enhanced by daily lesson plans for each class. Balance and harmony are yours.

    Integrity and Professionalism
Good teaching is more than just technical skill. While the Golden Lion instructors are highly skilled Kung Fu practitioners, the experience of the Tsui-Po family of masters is reflected in their professionalism, their attention to detail and deep theoretical knowledge. They nurture students with patience, and their classes are taught in a positive learning environment to ensure you enjoy your class.

The Golden Lion offers three full time professional training academies in Berwick, Rowville and Murrumbeena. All three academies are clean and hygienic with natural light and fresh air. They are carpeted throughout and fully equipped with martial arts equipment such as dummies, mirrors, bags, mitts, weapons etc. In addition, a separate Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinic is offered.

    Safety
We realise you may be tempted to attend cheaper classes but that may well result in poor quality instruction. While that is acceptable for other activities it is not with martial arts. Real benefits are only gained with correct instruction from experienced teachers. The alternative can cause serious injury and encourage the development of illness.

Because you depend on what you learn to help you in your daily life, be careful in your choice of teachers. For real peace of mind, make the effort to join Golden Lion Kung Fu. You will find that your classes are conducted professionally in a positive learning environment, while being safe and enjoyable.

Boys and girls from the age of 5 years are taught separately in our special children's classes. These classes are held separately to improve children's confidence, discipline and defence against bullies.

    Enjoyment
Your satisfaction begins as you learn the art of Golden Lion Kung Fu - a complete system of mind-body exercises, special breathing and meditation techniques with philosophies that build character, attitude, respect and discipline you'll need to succeed in life. These exercises also promote self-esteem, better health and well being.

The inherited style of the Tsui-Po masters is Hung Kuen (Hung Fut and Hung Gar) Kung Fu, which is based on the ancient Southern Chinese Shaolin kung fu. It has been passed from Master to pupil for generations. Today, the standardised international forms are also taught to enable students to participate internationally. Golden Lion's special teaching method, personal attention and service to you is what gives results, safety and enjoyment.
